Exhibition text
I used to be able to list all my favourite toilets in the city. I like beautiful, bright spaces with a practical but thoughtful choice of finishes. The aromatic scented sticks on the hand towel rack elevate the experience to the next level. Now the most beautiful bathroom in the city is inside my body. It is an imaginary space where my own body is not in conflict with the world. There I find the relief I seek.
Alongside the release of bodily needs, the public toilet is also a recurring sordid discourse of power politics, which seeks to seep deep into the structures of the human psyche and maintain gender control over the individual. In the exhibition, the toilet is a stage for clashing needs and emotions.
Jade Kallio is a Helsinki-based filmmaker and artist. They works in experimental film, performance and visual arts. Kallio is interested in the meanings attached to gender and the body and the spaces that produce them.
The exhibition is supported by Kone Foundation and AVEK.
